Greenslopes Limousin Stud was
established in 2003 by Trevor and Debbie
Stephens and their family, daughter
Kirsty and sons John and Trevor Jnr. The
limousin breed was selected by the
Stephens family, following a string of
successful years by John and Trevor Jnr
during their school years at the
Pittsworth State High School in the Led
Steer Hoof and Hook competitions. We
believed then and are more committed
than ever now to the belief that
Limousins are the most superior carcass
breed of all cattle. The Limousin female
crossed with either Angus, Murray Grey,
Hereford or Shorthorn bulls produces an
almost unbeatable carcass animal. We are
justifiably proud of our families
achievements with genetic selection of
Limousin cattle and the direct follow on
in the show ring where we are fortunate
to have produced many champions.
We are living proof that anyone from
any background can produce quality
cattle with a little forethought,
patience and dedication.

Trevor Snr is a Detective Senior
Sergeant of police presently stationed
as Officer in Charge of the South
Eastern Stock and Rural Crime
Investigation Squad (SARCIS) and South
Queensland Area Co-Ordinator. Debbie is
a qualified veterinary nurse emplyed by
Dr. Stephen Fogarty BVSc at the
Pittsworth Veterinary Surgery. Trevor
originally hailed from North Queensland,
being born in Charters Towers and had
been a committed Brahman breeder in
conjunction with the Stephens and Knuth
Families in that area. He was a very
successful equestrian competitor for
many years and still rides and breeds
horses as a hobby as well as with his
employment.
Debbie
was a Toowoomba born and bred girl whose
father, John Stark, enjoyed many
achievements with his dog (Australian
and Fox Terrier) breeding, winning at
State Level Championships. Debbie was
also a member of the Queensland Police
Service for several years, which is
where they both met at the Queensland
Mounted Police in 1980.
Our stud
name originates from our property “Greenslopes”,
a small but highly productive 160 acres
only 12 kilometres north-west of
Pittsworth. We run around 35 registered
breeders and we are proud to say that
each of those females is capable of
producing us a champion calf every year.
Many years ago, a good friend of ours,
Tony Gorring, (who was instrumental in
providing our sons a sound background
with their led steers) said to us “We
all go to someones property to look at
their cattle and we see an outstanding
calf. The farmer will always say, “Oh
yes, that’s out of my best cow – every
year, no matter what bull I use, she
always gives me my best calf.” Tony said
to us “Why do we all only have one of
those cows? Why can’t we have a whole
herd of them? Because everyone will tell
you they own a cow just like that!”
So we set
about, just like a famous and extremely
successfully Darling Downs Racehorse
Stud, who also only own a dozen mares
(each one worth around a million dollars
however!), to create our own small herd
of Limousin cows, each producing us a
champion calf every year. Our goal will
be completely achieved when we have 35
Greenslopes females doing just that!
We have made plenty of mistakes and had
our share of good fortune at sales and
with breeding, but with patience and
persistence, anyone can do it! Don’t
give up, for the sake of the breed –
whatever your selection criteria – stick
to your guns and your beliefs and
remember it takes a lot, a real lot, of
patience.
We breed bulls for showing and the sale
ring, however we use our own bulls very
little, only to produce a few steers
suitable for showing. We utilize
artificial insemination almost 100% of
the time, spending hours studying
pedigrees which we enjoy enormously. To
see your hours of work come to fruition
with a champion calf is a dream come
true. – you need no more pat on the
back. Our selection criteria with the
Limousin cattle, have been conformation,
temperament and growth for age.
Any
cattle, male or female, not exhibiting a
number 1 score for docility are culled,
cut and eaten, ensuring we produce
nothing but bombproof “Kids pony” bulls
and heifers. All our show cattle are
broken in, handled and exhibited by
school children from the Pittsworth
State High School for the first 16
months of their life. We are grateful
and fortunate to have the services of
Steve Hayward and Kellie Smith, “Advance
Charolais and Fitting Service” Allora,
to then carry on exhibiting our grown
bulls.
